Your Chinese Zodiac Sign Is One Character of a Four-Character Chart
The animal on the restaurant placemat is the year branch alone. If you have ever been told "Dragons are lucky with money," you have been reading one quarter of the data.

One pillar out of four
A Bazi chart is built from the year, month, day, and hour of birth, each written as a stem-branch pair. The animal you know is the branch of the year pillar — the least personal of the four in most readings.
Two people born in the same year share that one character and can have completely different charts. That is why 'Rats are thrifty' style statements feel true for some and absurd for others: they describe one character, not a person.

What the other pillars carry
The month pillar sets the seasonal strength of the chart and is the backbone of structural reading. The day stem is you — the reference point everything else is measured against. The hour pillar governs later life, children, and private motivation.
Dropping three of these to keep the animal is not simplification, it is a different (and much weaker) system.
Why the zodiac persists anyway
It is memorable, it is social, and it travels well across languages. Those are good reasons to keep it as a conversation opener.
Just do not plan a career around it. If a decision matters, the question worth asking is about timing and structure, and that needs the full chart.
