Client Background

The client is a woman in her early fifties, currently in middle age, with a stable career but considerable stress. Recently, she often experiences depressive moods and chest discomfort. Medical examinations revealed abnormal liver function, and Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosed liver qi stagnation, indicating an imbalance in the Wood element. She hopes to improve her physical condition and alleviate emotional issues through regulating the Five Elements.

Her family environment is relatively harmonious, but due to age and changes in life rhythm, the client feels both physical and mental burdens. She wishes to understand which aspect of her Five Elements is deficient, so she can take targeted health maintenance measures to strengthen her constitution and avoid future health risks.

BaZi Structure Interpretation

The client was born in the year of 癸丑 (Gui Chou), month of 癸亥 (Gui Hai), with the Day Master being 辛金 (Xin Metal), which is in a relatively strong state. The strong Xin Metal Day Master indicates a resolute personality with strong self-drive, suited to solving problems relying on her own strength. The overall pattern belongs to the Yang Ren (Goat Blade) pattern, which, while energetic, also suggests internal emotional fluctuations requiring attention to mind-body regulation.

The Yong Shen is Metal, indicating that the strength of the Xin Metal Day Master needs support and enhancement from Metal. The Ji Shen is Earth, as Earth overcomes Water and may restrict Metal’s function. During the current Da Yun of 戊辰 (Wu Chen), the influence of Earth is particularly strong, representing an unfavorable luck period requiring caution against major incidents. The Liu Nian of 丙午 (Bing Wu) features strong Fire and weak Metal, further suppressing Metal’s power. Overall, Wood and Fire are relatively strong in the Five Elements, with Earth and Fire generating each other, while Metal is constrained.

In summary, although Metal is the Yong Shen, it is weakened due to the influences of Da Yun and Liu Nian, and Earth as Ji Shen exacerbates Metal’s deficiency. The Wood element manifests prominently as liver qi stagnation, with Fire promoting Wood growth but also increasing Wood’s pressure. Thus, Wood shows stagnation but is essentially in an imbalanced state.

Focused Problem Assessment

Regarding the client’s symptoms of liver qi stagnation, combined with BaZi analysis, the Wood element appears active on the surface but is constrained by Fire and Earth in the environment and pattern, causing stagnation. Although Wood is strong, the qi movement is obstructed and requires smoothing rather than simply supplementing Wood. On the other hand, Xin Metal as the Yong Shen is relatively strong but suppressed by Earth and Fire, indicating insufficient physiological functions and mental regulation related to Metal.

From the perspective of Five Elements balance, the client most needs to supplement Metal. Metal generates Water, which moistens Wood and helps smooth liver qi, alleviating Wood’s stagnation. Supplementing Metal not only strengthens the Day Master but also regulates the relationships among Wood, Fire, and Earth, facilitating smooth qi flow. Directly supplementing Wood could worsen qi stagnation and create a vicious cycle.

Additionally, the Ji Shen Earth must be controlled to avoid excessive depletion of Metal’s strength. The current Da Yun of 戊辰 (Wu Chen) features heavy Earth qi, so health maintenance should aim to prevent Earth’s excessive dominance. The Liu Nian of 丙午 (Bing Wu) with strong Fire further weakens Metal, reminding that during Fire-strong seasons, attention should be paid to nourishing and protecting Metal.

Recommended Actions and Timing

To meet the need for supplementing Metal, it is recommended that the client increase intake of foods that nourish the lungs, moisten dryness, and supplement Metal, such as white fungus, lily bulbs, and lotus seeds, supplemented by other white-colored foods to enhance Metal. Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments can include formulas that nourish yin, moisten the lungs, soothe the liver, and regulate qi, focusing on supporting Metal and relieving liver qi stagnation.

In terms of lifestyle, it is advised to increase moderate breathing exercises and gentle physical activities such as Tai Chi and Qigong, which nourish lung Metal and help smooth qi flow, relieving emotional stress. At the same time, avoid overexertion and emotional agitation, especially during the Liu Nian of 丙午 (Bing Wu) when Fire is strong, maintaining a calm and peaceful mind.

Regarding timing, the current period is the late stage of the 戊辰 (Wu Chen) Da Yun, when Earth qi is heavy. It is advisable to strengthen control over Earth, avoiding excessive heavy eating and accumulation of dampness. The Liu Nian of 丙午 (Bing Wu) features strong Fire and Earth generating each other, with Metal being most suppressed. It is recommended to concentrate on supplementing Metal within the coming year, especially during the autumn season when Metal is strong, for optimal effect. Upon entering the next Da Yun, health strategies should be adjusted according to the new pattern.

Review and Reminders

In this case, mistakenly believing that liver qi stagnation means simply supplementing Wood could worsen qi stagnation and cause poor circulation. Therefore, correctly identifying Yong Shen and Ji Shen and combining them with the Da Yun and Liu Nian environment for regulation is key to ensuring the effectiveness of health maintenance. Five Elements supplementation should not be done blindly but flexibly adjusted according to the overall pattern and current luck.

Furthermore, BaZi-based regulation can only assist health; actual health maintenance must combine modern medical diagnosis and physical condition to prevent other Five Elements imbalances caused by improper supplementation. The client should maintain good lifestyle habits, regularly monitor bodily changes, and adjust the health plan in a timely manner.
